A NEW multi-million pound Simonside housing development has welcomed its first tenants.

Jimmy and Maureen Oley are among the first to move into the 20 two-bed bungalows on the Beechbrooke housing development.

The homes have been fitted out to a high specification, some include a walk-in shower and one has a wet room. Simonside and Rekendyke councillor, Coun Lynne Proudlock, handed over the keys to the new arrivals.

She said: “I’m delighted to see the first residents moving in and I’m sure they will enjoy many happy years living there.

“The homes look wonderful and are a real boost for the area.”

Mr and Mrs Oley said they were delighted with their new bungalow, which is built on almost the same spot where they lived in Aldbrough Street before the 1930s properties were demolished a few years ago to make way for the regeneration of the area. Mrs Oley, 60, said: “We love our new home. It’s very beautiful and really spacious. We’ve lived in Simonside for many, many years and my husband has done all his life, so we’re thrilled to have one of these new bungalows in the area where we want to stay.”

Coun Proudlock is standing for Labour in Simonside and Rekendyke at the Local Elections on May 22. The other candidates are: Sandra Scoular (UKIP); Carole Troupe (Lib Dem) and Stanley Wallace (Conservative).
