IT will be movie night with a difference when a park is transformed into an American-style drive-in cinema.

Bosses at Ocean Beach Pleasure Park have organised a trio of Halloween drive-in movie events at Bents Park in South Shields.

A huge 33ft by 17ft screen will show three films from November 1 to 3, and visitors will be able to enjoy the screenings from the comfort of their cars.

The movies will cater for between 150 and 200 vehicles, allowing hundreds of film fans to enjoy the fun.

Sound will be transmitted though each motor’s FM radio system while treats such as hot dogs, nachos and drinks will be served during the night.

Maxwell Sheeran, of Ocean Beach Pleasure Park, came up with the idea, which will be a first for the borough, after seeing a similar event in a Scottish park.

He said: “We are looking forward to introducing something new to South Tyneside, with movies being shown for families and adults.

“There will be some fantastic giveaways and offers for people purchasing tickets via the website.

“We hope to be able to make this on ongoing event, with special movies nights held throughout the year.”

Kids movie Monsters v Aliens will be shown on November 1, while scary movies Shutter Island and The Devil Inside – which both have a 15 certificate– will be played on the following days.

Last month the Gazette revealed that town planners had earmarked the Chapter Row and Barrington Street area of South Shields to be transformed into a picture house.

In an online vote, 58 per cent of readers welcomed the move – so there’s a high chance they will enjoy the outdoor drive-in experience.

If the event is a success, screenings for Christmas and Valentine’s Day will also be set up.

The films will start between 6.30pm and 8pm, and it will cost £20 per car.

However, there will be a range of offers on the venue’s website in forthcoming weeks.
