THE Tyne was lit up by fireworks last night during the star-studded Great North Million Opening Ceremony.
The spectacular event was staged on the Newcastle Quayside to celebrate the fact this year’s Great North Run will see the world-famous half-marathon record its one millionth finisher.
Thousands of spectators, including many who have taken part in previous runs before, gathered to enjoy performances from North-East stars, including Ant and Dec, Sting and Mark Knopfler, as well as local folk musicians and dance duo Chase and Status.
The event was devised by Bradley Hemmings, artistic director of the London 2012 Paralympic Opening Ceremony and North-East author David Almond produced a script that was narrated by Auf Wiedersehen, Pet star Tim Healy and former Eastenders actress Jill Halfpenny.
The evening finished with a spectacular fireworks finale.
