A taxi driver had a lucky escape when his car burst into flames in a South Shields street.

A reader sent us these dramatic pictures of the blaze in Victoria Road.

One resident said: "I thought it was my neighbour's car but then I realised it was a taxi on fire.

"It's just gone up in flames."

Watch manager Ian Laidler, from South Shields fire station, said the alarm call had come in just after 8.30am.

"We were there for about half an hour," he said.

"The driver was the only person in the car. He over and got out when he smelled smoke after he put his heater on.

"Nobody was hurt."
