* Northumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner has called for new guidelines for magistrates to give them confidence to sentence more people who appear before them, using their local knowledge, rather than sending them to the Crown Court.
Vera Baird’s comments follow Justice Minister Damian Green’s comments that more than 4,000 defendants a year are sent to Crown Court to receive sentences within the powers of the magistrates.
She said: “What is needed are new guidelines to give magistrates the confidence to keep and sentence more cases.”
