Police appeal after woman’s body found in River Tyne near South Shields pier

A WITNESS appeal has been launched by police after the body of a woman was found in waters off South Shields pier.

Officers were called to South Pier after the Coastguard was alerted to the find by fishermen at about 12.37pm, today.

The body of a woman, believed to be in her 40s, was recovered from the waters and airlifted to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.

Inquiries by police are ongoing and they are appealing to anyone who was in the South pier area on Wednesday morning or lunchtime and may have seen a woman near to the edge of the pier, or anyone with any other information, to contact them.
