Officers from Northumbria Police have now revealed they will be visiting the locations on the list - but don't expect anyone to turn up.

The dates the group said it would be visiting the borough's schools are October 26, 27 and 28 – during the half-term break.

A police spokesman said: "We are aware of this post (and other similar ones) doing the rounds on social media.

"We aren’t expecting anyone to actually turn up at these places dressed as clowns but we are going to be attending anyway just to make sure.

"We’ll have officers around at the locations to speak to people and make sure things are ok.

"Our message to anyone thinking about taking part is not to.

"If you do choose to come along with the intention of scaring people then you face having action taken against you."

The 'killer clown' craze came from the US and has spread on social media, with a Facebook page sharing photos and videos of the incidents.
