A POST Office branch is set for a fresh new look.
West Park Post Office, in Stanhope Road, South Shields, will close for refurbishment later this month.
It will be brought up to date with a modern, open-plan retail environment and longer opening hours.
People will also be able to tax their car at the branch for the first time.
A Post Office spokesman said: “As part of Post Office plans to modernise the network and extend opening, West Park Post Office will have three serving positions.
“These will be a mix of two traditional screened serving positions, and a post office serving point at the retail counter.
“This is a new concept for delivering Post Office products and services, available alongside retail transactions during shop opening hours.
“Car tax will be added to the wide range of Post Office services available.”
The branch will close on Monday, January 27, and re-open on Wednesday, February 5. The new opening hours will be from 8.30am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday.
Nearby branches in Green Street, South Shields, and Bede Industrial Estate, Jarrow, will be happy to look after the needs of customers during the closure.
Post Office area manager, Anne Clark, said: “We understand how important the Post Office is to residents around West Park, and we are confident that this new modern Post Office service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.
“This modernisation is part of a three-year investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office, that will see around half of the Post Office network converting to new-style branches, and marks a commitment to no more branch closure programmes.”
The Post Office, now independent of Royal Mail, is the largest retail network in the UK, with more than 11,500 branches.
