REGULARS at a South Tyneside pub raised £450 for a cancer charity by dining out on cake.

Staff at the Colliery Tavern in Hedworth Lane, Boldon Colliery took part in Macmillan Cancer Support’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning event.

Dozens of cakes, scones and pies were baked and enjoyed by customers as they boosted coffers for the charity.

Margaret Hughes, who was involved with the fundraiser, said: “Everyone enjoyed a game of bingo, won lots of prizes on the tombola and tried to guess the number of sweets in the jar and the weight of a giant cupcake.

“Altogether it a very enjoyable morning, and we managed to raise approximately £450.”

A number of events were held right across South Tyneside as groups and organisations took part. Last year, the event raised a record £10m, with all proceeds being used by the charity to help provide medical, emotional, practical and financial care to people and families affected by cancer across the UK.
