Readers have been outraged after an autistic youngster was targeted by a ‘killer clown’.

The 11-year-old and his mother were confronted by someone dressed as a clown on Wednesday evening in the Horsley Hill area of South Shields.

The mother, who does not want to be named, says her son now refuses to leave the house and has been left so traumatised he is now unable to go upstairs on his own.

The schoolboy was being taken to a youth group meeting at around 7pm when someone dressed as a clown jumped out at the pair as they walked through an alleyway near Lincoln Road, South Shields.

It is the latest in a series of incidents in which people, dressed as clowns, deliberately set out to frighten young children.

Gazette readers are furious and fed-up of the craze, which stems from America.

Gemma Cobb wrote: “Think this is disgusting. I bet if it was the other way around and someone was doing this to those idiots, they would be scared and probably wouldn’t like it either.”

Lesley Paul said: “They’re morons with nothing better to do.”

Kelly Morton added: “ They’re just doing it for the attention. Just ignore them and they’ll get bored and go away.

“ Pathetic as little people. Clown is the right word for them.”
