A DEVOTED husband and wife “who fell in love through letters” today celebrate their diamond years.
Henry and Mary Greener married in St Matthew’s Roman Catholic Church, York Avenue, Jarrow, 60 years ago.
The couple, of Calf Close, Jarrow, met when former Merchant Navy seaman Henry, 80, docked in the town.
“We met on the street,” explained Henry.
“I whistled and shouted of her, and eventually she came round.
“She gave me her address so I could write to her, and we fell in love over letters.”
Henry, and Mary, 79, who worked in Wright’s Biscuits factory, are parents to Norman Greener, 44, and grandparents to Chloe Greener, 14.
The happy couple are looking forward to a surprise from their family to celebrate their special occasion.
“We are looking forward to it,” said Henry, whose celebrated another milestone, his 80th birthday, yesterday.
“But we don’t know what’s happening yet.
“We have been told we are going for a meal, but it will be a surprise I should imagine.”
He added: “Very few people get to that anniversary.
“We are both disabled so we don’t get out much, so as long as everything goes off all right, it should be a good day.”
