Two people are being treated in hospital for serious injuries after a smash on a busy South Tyneside road today.
Police, fire crews and paramedics were called to Jarrow Road at its junction with Church Bank, Jarrow, at 2.20pm.
Two cars are believed to have been involved in a collision.
One person was taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, while a second has been taken to South Tyneside District Hospital.
Police say both are being treated for “serious but not life-threatening” injuries.
The road was closed in both directions to allow the aftermath of the collision to be dealt with.
Both carriageways are now open, but drivers have been warned of delays.
The accident is not far from the spot where a pensioner died in a crash in 2014.
