A SCOUT group is celebrating after Freemasons gave it a cash boost.

The 5th Jarrow Scout Group, based at Monkton Park Methodist Church in Jarrow, was given a £500 donation during a visit by representatives of the organisation’s Durham province.

The group was given the helping hand because it was in need of new equipment.

Province communications officer Paul O’Doherty said: “The scout group had come to the attention of the committee, and it was decided we would make a contribution from the province of Durham’s benevolent fund.

“A lot of the work of the Freemasons is fundraising for charity, and we are pleased we are able to help out local groups.”

The money was raised by lodges around the province, including those based in South Tyneside, through fundraising nights and collections.

The donation was presented to the scout group by John Leadley, a representative of the benevolent fund and local Freemason Danny Martin.

Mr O’Doherty added: “The children were really pleased with the donation. It was great to see.”
