Seek help, old folk’s carers urged

CARER CALL ... John Briers of Age UK South Tyneside.

CARER CALL ... John Briers of Age UK South Tyneside.

PEOPLE in South Tyneside who are looking after elderly relatives are being encouraged to seek help.

The call came from Age UK South Tyneside chief executive John Briers, after an event dedicated to people who give up their time to care for others.

The organisation, which is based in Beach Road, South Shields, hosted a pamper session as part of its Older People’s Festival.

During the afternoon, carers were encouraged to forget their responsibilities for a few hours, and indulge in a range of treatments on offer, including manicures and hand massages, and afternoon tea.

There are 16,000 people in South Tyneside providing more than 50 hours a week unpaid care and support to a relative, partner or friend.

Mr Briers said: “Caring can be an overwhelming experience, bringing irreversible change to lives and relationships.

“Carers need emotional and practical support to assist them in their day-to-day tasks and access to respite to take a break from their caring role.

“Our Time 4 U service identifies hidden carers, and we provide a number of events and activities to encourage carers to take time for themselves.”
