A TYNESIDE shop assistant didn’t know she’d had a lottery win until she ran her ticket through the machine at work six days later.
Ann Irving, 59, only found out she had won when she went to work at The Co-operative store in Ryton, Gateshead, and asked a colleague to check her ticket.
Only then did it emerge that Ann and her husband of 37 years, David, also 59, had won £52,294.90 by matching five balls in the EuroMillions draw.
Mother-of-two Ann, from Crawcrook, Tyne and Wear, said: “When the slip came out stating that I was a winner and that I had to contact Camelot, I knew I’d won over £500.
“My colleague then ran the winner report off the machine to see how much my ticket had won, and I was absolutely stunned when it stated £52,294.90.
“I couldn’t believe it and asked my manager to double check as I thought I was reading it wrong.
“He said: ‘It’s right, you’ve won £52,294.90’ at which point I went white as a sheet.”
After contacting Camelot, which confirmed the win, Ann decided to store the ticket in her locker until the end of her nine-hour shift.
But her manager advised that it might be best to ask her husband to collect it and store it safely at home.
Ann said: “When I called David I said ‘Do you want the good news or the good news’ and then I explained that I’d won £52,294.90 on the EuroMillions, to which he replied, ‘Ann, you wouldn’t joke about this would you?’ and I said ‘No, I wouldn’t’.”
David, self-employed handy man, was at the shop in an instant to collect the ticket and take it home to store in the safe.
When Ann arrived home after finishing her shift at 10.15pm, the couple celebrated with a £3.99 bottle of wine and called her sons, Simon, 31 and Stephen, 28, to tell them the news, but they didn’t believe her.
Top of the shopping list is a new Skoda Octavia Estate and as they’ll both be turning 60 next year, the pair are now planning an extra special celebration, with a couple of holidays.
They’re also going to treat their pet dog, Candy, to a new chew, and a collar for their cat, Bazal.
Ann added: “You always dream of winning, but I never thought that it would happen to me. But it has, and if it can happen for me it can happen for anyone.”
The lucky dip ticket was bought from The Co-operative Food store on Main Road in Ryton.
The winning numbers from the Friday, August 23, EuroMillions draw were 1, 6, 26, 30, 37, and the lucky stars were 5 and 8.
