A SOUTH Shields dance teacher could be on the road to success.

Stuart Hatton will today compete in the final of Mr Gay Europe in Zurich, Switzerland.

The 28-year-old, crowned Mr Gay UK last year, was surprised to find out how much support he is getting back home.

An electronic sign, displaying the message ‘vote Stuart Hatton for Mr Gay Europe’, followed by a website address, has been put up near White Mare Pool roundabout, on the edge of South Tyneside.

It was placed there by South Tyneside Council.

The same sign has been used in the past to encourage people to vote for Joe McElderry and Little Mix on The X Factor and Collabro on Britain’s Got Talent.

Stuart, co-principal at his family dance studio, the Hatton Academy of Dance, in Commercial Road, South Shields, said: “The road signs in my home town of South Shields say ‘Vote Stuart Hatton’. Oh my goodness.

“You have no idea how I’m feeling right now.

“It’s amazing. I wish I was there to see it.”

Stuart will compete in a number of rounds – including demonstrating a talent, making a speech, and modelling swimwear – in a bid to win the title.

Coun Alan Kerr, deputy leader of the council and its lead member for equality and diversity, said: “I wish Stuart the best of luck, and I hope he does well.”
