Snooker club hits bullseye for hospice

ON TARGET ... Shields Snooker Club manager John Maughan, left, hands a cheque for 1,000 to St Clares Hospice fundraiser Vanessa Mustard-Wright, right, with members who took part in the fundraising darts marathon.

A SOUTH Tyneside snooker club was on cue for charity – but it was a dartboard rather than the green baize that helped them hit their fundraising target.

Big-hearted darts team members at Shields Snooker Centre, in Chichester Road, South Shields, took part in a darting marathon to rack up £1,000 for St Clare’s Hospice.

Arrows were flying fast and furious as club members – with a little help from their friends and family – kept up the pace on the oche for 12 hours from 11am until 11pm.

Now they’re even hoping to make it a double, with thoughts turning to the prospect of a 24-hour marathon next time out.

Sponsorship flooded in from generous members of the club, so even when arms were tiring from hours of throwing, the charity champions kept their eyes on the prize. The event was the second darts marathon held by the club, with the latest effort topping the excellent £800 raised in their debut challenge.

Jim Taroni, 69, a member of the club, said: “We had a lot of club members and family and friends help out.

“My 14-year-old grandson had a go. St Clare’s is a great cause. Everyone knows someone who has been helped there.

“We raised £1,000 and St Clare’s were over the moon with it. We could go from doing 12 hours to 24 hours, it is something we are going to look into.”

St Clare’s Hospice, on Primrose Terrace in Jarrow, provides palliative care to adults with life-limiting illnesses.

The charity must raise about £1.4m of its annual £2m running costs to ensure its services can be delivered free of charge, with fundraising initiatives playing a key role.
