A SOUTH Tyneside couple are celebrating their 60-year journey though married life together.
Stan and Olive Brett marked their diamond wedding anniversary last week with a surprise party.
The pair are both familiar faces at Westoe Travel in Westoe Road, South Shields, as they help their only son, Graeme Brett, run the family business.
They previously both worked at Brett’s Newsagents next door for more than 20 years, until the business was sold a few years ago.
Mr Brett, 55, of South Shields, said: “Although mam and dad retired from their careers many years ago, they have continued to help out at both the family’s newsagent’s business and now the travel agents.
“We held a surprise party for them, with all of the family, and they were delighted to receive a congratulatory card from the Queen.”
Stan, 86, previously a school caretaker, and Olive, 84, who used to work for Norwich Union, met while at church and now live in Wallsend, North Tyneside, but they are still regular visitors to South Tyneside.
They have two grandchildren, Gillian, 30, and Martin, 27, plus great-grandsons Harry, three, and eight-month-old Oliver.
Graeme believes the secret to his parents’ successful marriage is the fact that they’ve remained active into their 80s.
He said: “I think the reason they’ve had such a happy marriage is because they always like getting out and meeting new people.
“They also very active. They’re always out in the garden or walking the dog or, of course, they are in the travel agent’s.”
