Over 240 pupils from nine primary schools accompanied the Choristers of Durham Cathedral for an event which marked the finale of a term’s work with the Cathedral’s hugely successful Music Outreach programme.

Each term James Randle, director of Music Outreach at Durham Cathedral, and the Cathedral Choristers visit primary schools across the region to teach the pupils and their teachers 45 minutes of song.

Over the last six weeks the children memorised a number of songs, ranging from Gershwin’s ‘I Got Rhythm’ to the more traditional ‘Ave Maria.’

This term, the Music Outreach celebration had been particularly special for Revd Canon David Kennedy, vice-dean of Durham Cathedral, as his former school - Lord Blyton Primary School - were taking part.

At a rehearsal at Lord Blyton Primary, Canon Kennedy said: “It was a wonderful experience to see the children at Lord Blyton becoming so engaged in music and singing.

“The Music Outreach staff and the choristers really do some marvellous work and I was glad to witness this first hand.

“Music is such an integral part of my life at Durham Cathedral, and it is extremely satisfying to see these traditions being passed on to the next generation.”

Mr Randle said: “The Music Outreach programme has gone from strength to strength through the years, and it is exciting to be holding our first Celebration event of 2017.

“The nine participating primary schools have worked extremely hard to learn their songs, and it is wonderful to see the children celebrating their achievement in the company of their friends and family.”
