The new building in the grounds will be used by both pupils and the community and features an open plan classroom, two changing rooms with disabled bathrooms, a kitchen area, cafe seating area and outdoor decking.

The Hide will be used for a range of activities and as an outdoor learning space that will help pupils use a pond in the school grounds.

Head teacher, Paula Selby, said: “The Hide is a valuable and exciting new asset for our pupils and soon, the wider community.

“From October we hope to offer three relevant and inspiring courses for adults with learning difficulties and disabilities around the use of mobile phones, building relationships and being healthy.

“The aim of these courses is to support our young people to become successful adults who feel valued and part of their own community.”

She added: “The school has a very strong association with the South Tyneside Ability Football group which use our site each Wednesday evening and Sunday morning.”

The Hide was officially opened during the schools summer fayre. The day saw youngsters along with their families enjoy a range of fairground rides and take part in traditional summer activities.

The fun day helps to boost school funds with cash used to make its grounds more interesting for pupils to learn more about the outdoors.

Gareth Barber, MD of The Stable Company, which built The Hide, added: “It has been a pleasure to bring to life the vision for this build at Keelman’s Way.

“The school is an exemple when it comes to meeting and exceeding the needs of its pupils and its commitment to providing these facilities is testament to that.

“We are confident this building will endure for many years to come and continue to support the great work being done here.”
