SUPER swimmer Josef Craig will make a big splash when he takes part in the annual Boxing Day Dip for St Clare’s Hospice.

The borough Paralympian champion will make waves for the charity, along with the Mayor and Mayoress of South Tyneside, Coun Ernest Gibson and Patricia Ridley.

The Jarrow-based hospice has annual operating costs of almost £2m and relies on the generosity of local fundraisers to provide a range of day and residential care for people with life-limiting illnesses.

Individuals and groups from throughout South Tyneside will take part in this year’s dip, which will take place at noon on Boxing Day, at Sandhaven Beach, beside the Sand Dancer pub in Beach Road, South Shields.

Coun Gibson urged others to support the hospice event by signing up today.

He said: “The Mayoress and I are really looking forward to taking part in the Boxing Day Dip, as money raised will go towards helping local people through this year’s Mayor’s Charity.

“I’m also delighted that Josef Craig has agreed to join everyone taking the plunge, all in a good cause.

“St Clare’s Hospice is one of four charities that we are helping to raise funds towards.

“The hospice does an amazing job in supporting individuals and their families during their time of need.

“If people could either sign up for the Boxing Day Dip or sponsor somebody they know, then that would make a real difference.”

A hospice spokesman said: “We’re hoping to make this year’s Boxing Day Dip bigger and better than ever and get more people taking part.”

Registration starts at 11am at the Sand Dancer, and the fancy dress winners will be announced at 11.50am, with prizes for the best-dressed individuals and teams.

People can register today by calling 451 6400 or e-mailing
fundraising@stclareshospice.co.uk.
