A SWIMMING marathon to raise cash for a South Tyneside cancer charity is turning into a family affair.
Cancer Connections’ Pool Ya Pennies event will take place at Harton Technology College in South Shields tomorrow.
But as well as those taking to the water to raise cash and awareness for the charity, there’s plenty to do for kids on their half-term break in the Lisle Road school’s hall.
There will be a bouncy castle, plus South Shields face-painter Nicola White from Faces 4 Fun, will be on hand to keep youngsters happy, while there are also singers performing throughout the day.
Among those performing are Pride of South Tyneside Young Performer of the Year nominees, Festival 4 Stars finalists Eve Simpson and Olivia Davies and Gazette Face of 2008, Anna Barras.
Although the event runs all day from 7am to 8pm, the hall will be open for families between 10am and 4pm.
Organiser Gavin Wells, who is aiming to swim 1,000 lengths on the day, said: “It’s brilliant to know these businesses and young people are happy to give up their time to help such a great cause. As a dad-of-two myself, we’re always looking for stuff to do in the school holidays and if we weren’t already involved, I’d definitely be popping down with the kids.”
The event has been sponsored and supported by Harton Technology College, Harton Sixth Form and Wellness @Harton sports centre.
Competitors can enjoy a special pre-event meal tonight.
Swimmers can pop along to Bravi in South Shields with their family between 5.45pm and 8pm and eat a specially-prepared food from the Pool Ya Pennies Pasta menu.
They can enjoy a two or three-course meal from the menu at the North Street restaurant, and boss Gino Minchella will be donating £2 per head towards the charity.
He said: “We always try to help where we can, and this is such a worthy cause.”
