THERE seems to be something in the water here in South Tyneside.
Whether it’s singing, acting, telling jokes, or being sporty – the borough seems able to produce stars like there’s no tomorrow.
Now, one performing arts club is on the hunt for the next big thing.
The Nearly Famous Performing Arts Group is launching South Tyneside Talent Week.
The week-long event is set to take place at Brinkburn Community Association in Harton Lane, South Shields, from Monday, October 27 to Saturday, November 1.
The competition, which boasts a £500 top prize, is being organised by Nearly Famous founder Christopher Perry.
He said: “We are looking for talented people, groups, trios, and duets to take part in the competition, whether they are six or 60, can sing, dance, act, tell jokes, make films, do photography or paint, we want to see it.
“Participants will be asked to perform one night of the week in front of a panel of five lovely judges. The judges will put two participants through and then the third will be voted for by the audience on the night.”
Christopher, who is also a director of South Tyneside Academy of Musical Performance (STAMP), will host the showcases alongside borough singer Rachel Robson.
The competition also has the backing of the Mayor and Mayoress of South Tyneside Coun Fay Cunningham and Stella Matthewson, and South Tyneside Homes, who have stepped in as sponsors.
Christopher added: “We have an excellent team of producers including myself, Terence Perry and Richard Ludlow supporting the event as well as a great team helping it run smoothly.
“We really want to make this a big success so that we can bring this to South Tyneside every year.
“The winner will receive a grand prize of £500 to help them develop their talent however they wish and will be asked to come back again next year to judge the new contestants.
“There’s no competition like it in the North East at the moment and we would really love for people to get involved, buy tickets and support this great event.”
