STAYING THE COURSE ... Tony The Fridge Phoenix-Morrison is well on his way to completing a remarkable marathon challenge.

A SOUTH Tyneside marathon man is banking on home advantage as he gets set to complete the latest leg of an incredible charity feat in familiar territory.

Tony ‘The Fridge’ Phoenix-Morrison is nearly two weeks into a gruelling 1,053-mile route from John O’Groats to Land’s End in aid of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation – all with a 92lb fridge on his back.

The super-fit 49-year-old grandad, from Hebburn, will finish the 15th of 40 marathons in as many days back in the North East, at Newcastle United’s St James’s Park ground at about 6pm on Saturday.

The poignant finishing post for Magpies fan Tony will be the Sir Bobby Robson statue outside the stadium.

Tony has raised tens of thousands of pounds for the foundation through a series of punishing challenges, including running 30 half-marathons in 30 days and running for 24 hours, all with his ‘trademark’ appliance on his back.

He is due to finish the Smeg Endurance Challenge when he hits Land’s End on September 11 – after 40 days and 40 nights of epic effort.

Tony said: “It will be very emotional for me going through Newcastle. I will have the chance to see my wife and all the family.

“I will have to pull myself together. It will be a special moment.”
