Toddlers raise cash for sick kids

CHARITY CASH ... Grace House Hospice fundraiser Karen Maclennan, left, receives a cheque for 1,200 from Maria Lazenby, right, and parents and toddlers at St Matthews RC Church, Jarrow.

CHARITY CASH ... Grace House Hospice fundraiser Karen Maclennan, left, receives a cheque for 1,200 from Maria Lazenby, right, and parents and toddlers at St Matthews RC Church, Jarrow.

CHARITY youngsters in Jarrow have toddled to another fund-raising bonanza for poorly children.

Over the last eight years, members of St Matthew’s RC Church playgroup, based in York Avenue, Jarrow, have raised £12,200 for the Grace House North East Children’s Hospice Appeal.

Founded by local broadcaster Kathy Secker, the charity is creating a state-of-the-art children’s hospice in Sunderland.

Children and parents at the playgroup handed over £1,200 to hospice officials and aim to continue raising cash. Playgroup leaders Bev Jones and Maria Lazenby say children and parents have staged numerous charity events over the last year to boost the appeal.

These have included coffee mornings, table-top sales and a sponsored toddle around Valley View Park, Jarrow.

Mrs Lazenby said: “We are totally committed to raising money for the Grace House appeal, because we deal with children and because it’s a great cause.

“We have just received a letter from Grace House, saying we have raised £12,200 over the last eight years, which is great news.

“Before we started supporting the hospice, we raised £10,000 for the CLIC Sargent cancer charity.”

Playgroup officials have thanked everyone for their charity work and support, including Keith and Rona Moore.
