TWO former Newcastle United legends are heading to South Tyneside to talk about their sporting highs and lows.
Kevin Keegan and Alan Shearer are the latest names set to appear at the Hedworth Hall.
Former United skipper and manager Keegan will appear at the venue in Dean Road, South Shields, on Wednesday, April 30.
The 63-year-old joined the Magpies as a player in 1982 and led the club back into the top-flight of English football.
He later returned to St James’s Park as manager in 1992, again winning promotion, and building a star-studded team known as ‘the Entertainers’ that captivated both the Toon Army and neutrals alike.
During his time in the hot seat, United broke the world transfer fee record by signing Shearer from Blackburn Rovers in 1996 for £15m.
Keegan quit in 1997 but later returned for a short, ill-fated spell as boss under Mike Ashley in 2008.
Shearer, who scored a club record 206 goals for Newcastle, and who remains the Premier League’s all-time highest marksman, will be at Hedworth Hall on Thursday, May 8.
The former England captain, now a Match of the Day pundit, will answer questions from fans on aspects of his career, including Newcastle United.
He said: “I’m really looking forward to meeting the fans in South Shields. There is always plenty to talk about on these occasions as far as Newcastle United is concerned, but with the World Cup on the horizon I’m sure the fans will be wanting to look at England to.”
Promoter Danny Cox of Precision Sports, who is bringing Shearer to South Shields, said: “It really is a big coup bringing Alan to South Shields.
“His diary is full 365 days of the year, and we have worked hard to make the venue’s dream a reality.
“Alan is one of the best after-dinner speakers in the business, and the fans will go home feeling that they have met a sporting legend and, most importantly, got value for money. “
Hedworth Hall manager Gavin Yanetta added: “It is great we are able to continue to bring some of the biggest names in the sporting arena here to South Shields.
“The nights are a great opportunity for fans to ask questions of their sporting heroes, and events like these in the past have always attracted huge crowds and have been big successes.”
The events featuring the former Magpie stars follows on from the sell-out ‘An Evening With...’ event featuring former Sunderland Manager Peter Reid and former Black Cats player Micky Gray.
