A new scheme aims to help young people take their first step onto the career ladder.

Industry training specialist AIS has 30 places up for grabs on its forthcoming training programme.

The scheme is open to anyone aged between 16-18 and living within South Tyneside.

Those who finish the course could end up with full-time paid work, a traineeship or apprenticeship.

AIS marketing executive Janelle Kinsey said: “Our Connect programmes prepare young people for the workplace by giving them a strong work ethic and the sought-after skills that employers need.

“We have an unrivalled track record of helping people progress their careers, and we commercially train 17,500 people every year from all over the world and know what employers want.

“We are now planning to use this extensive expertise to help youngsters from South Tyneside and urge anyone interested to get in touch.”

The AIS Connect scheme is funded and lasts for 20 weeks.

Those taking part in the course will learn new skills including electrical and mechanical engineering, welding and scaffolding.

They will also take part in one-day a week work experience.

The teenagers will be trained in AIS’s industrial training village in North Shields which stretches over two acres and includes specialised centres for skills including engineering, rope access, rigging and lifting and off-shore survival.

Previous schemes run by AIS - led by a team of more than 50 instructors, with industry experience - has resulted in up to 75 per cent of students taking part in the courses going on to further study or securing full-time jobs after completing their training.

The courses are endorsed by someone of the worlds leading trade associations including IRATA, OPITO, SPRAT, MCA, IOSH, ECITB, CompEx, GWO and RenewableUK.

An open evening will take place at Ocean Road Community Centre in Ocean Road, South Shields on Tuesday on April 26 between 6pm until 8pm.

The event will give people the chance to find out more about the training programme on offer.
