Man, 81, suffers serious injuries after being knocked over in South Tyneside

An 81-year-old man is being treated for serious injuries after being knocked over by a car in South Tyneside.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the incident yesterday in Perth Avenue, South Shields.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Police are appealing for witnesses after an 81-year-old man was knocked over by a car in South Tyneside.

"The incident happened at 5.20pm on Monday, November 21.

"The man got off a bus on Perth Avenue between Hobart Avenue and Queensland Avenue in South Shields and crossed the road.

"As he crossed the road he was struck by a Silver Skoda Octavia taxi.

"The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"Officers are carrying out inquiries and appealing for witnesses.

"Anyone with information should contact Northumbria Police on 101 quoting reference 734 211116."

The road was closed while police and ambulance services attended the scene.

An eyewitness said: "I hope he is okay, I was there when it happened.

"I saw people come out to help him then the ambulance arrived."
