South Shields motorcyclist killed in crash

THE motorcyclist who died after a crash in North Tyneside last week was from South Tyneside, it was revealed today.

Police named the rider as Michael Lewthwaite, 49, from the South Shields area.

He died in the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle on Friday, the day after the accident.

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the crash, which happened at 6.50am on Thursday on the A187 in Times View Terrace, East Howdon, near the entrance of the pedestrian tunnel.

The motorbike rider collided with a Royal Mail van, whose driver - a man in his 50s - suffered only minor injuries.
