Two burglars have been jailed after house raids in South Tyneside.

Kirk Blakey, 37, of Winskell Road in South Shields was sentenced to more than two years at Newcastle Crown Court.

It follows a burglary after a burglary in Lulworth Avenue in Jarrow in July 2015.

He was sentenced to 876 days imprisonment for burglary and 6 months for a separate charge of theft from the person. The sentences will be served concurrently.

40-yera-old John Bothick of Hexham Avenue in Hebburn also appeared at Newcastle Crown Court yesterday where he was sentenced to 29 months for an attempted burglary in Park Villa View in Jarrow earlier this year.

Detective Inspector Paul Stewart said: "This is great news for local residents in South Tyneside. Two burglars have been given custodial sentences and put in prison where they are away off our streets and unable to commit any further burglaries.

"We take burglary offences very seriously and do everything we can to ensure burglars are caught and put before the courts, our efforts to pursue them are relentless and we will not stop targeting them."

Police in South Tyneside and Sunderland are currently running Operation Impact aimed at targeting burglars and burglary offences.
