The A19 northbound was closed after a car crashed into a lamp-post, which then fell into the road.

It happened close to the turn-off for the A182 road near Dalton Park, in Murton.

A Seat car with two men inside hit the post on Wednesday morning.

The lamp-post then fell into the road, causing havoc for other motorists.

The men, who are both from the Newcastle area, have been taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital with minor injuries.

Durham Constabulary have said that police, fire and ambulance crews have been on the scene as well as recovery vehicles which are helping to clear the scene.

The road is now re-open.

A spokeswoman for Durham Police said: "This morning a Seat Altea car went into a lamp-post on the A19 northbound.

"The lamp-post then fell into the road.

"Officers had to wait for workers to make the lamppost safe and the two men, who are from the Newcastle area, have been taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

"The road was re-opened at 11.20am."
