A large fire broke out this evening when a pile of tyres left inside a former paintballing business caught light.

Firefighters from Hebburn Fire Station were called to Wardley Lane, just a short distance from their base in Victoria Road West in the town, at 7.15pm this evening.

They were joined by crews from South Shields and Washington as they tackled the incident, just over the border into Gateshead.

Two officers wearing breathing apparatus were sent in to deal with the blaze, with hose reels used to put out the fire.

The crews were on the scene until around 8.40pm.
