SOUTH Tyneside’s jobless total has risen again, according to new figures released today.

In January, a total of 7,227 people in the borough claimed Jobseeker’s Allowance, compared with December’s total of 6,730, which was itself a rise on the previous month’s figure of 6,696.

This means that 7.2 per cent of the working age population in South Tyneside is jobless, compared with 5.6 per cent for the North East as a whole and four per cent across Britain.

Local youth unemployment, affecting people aged from 18 to 24, is also continuing to climb, from 2,130 in December to 2,275 last month.

This amounts to 15.3 of the borough’s working age population, compared with 11.2 per cent across the North East and 8.1 in Britain as a whole.

Nationally, UK unemployment rose by 48,000 to 2.67m in the three months to December.
