A MAN has been found dead in a car at the bottom of cliffs in South Tyneside.
Emergency services were scrambled at just after 10am today after reports of a vehicle in the water at Marsden, near to the Grotto pub.
A 21-year-old man was found in a Citreon C2 car.
Police, firefighters, paramedics and a team from the RNLI attended.
A spokesman for Tynemouth RNLI said: “We think that the car went over in the early hours of the morning or even at some point yesterday.
“The body was recovered by emergency services and the volunteer lifeboat crew took him to South Shields ferry landing where they were met by funeral directors.”
The body was then transported to the mortuary.
A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: “Police received a report that a car had gone over the cliffs at just after 10am, today.
“Emergency services were sent to the scene where the driver of the car was found dead. It is believed to be liked to an earlier report of a missing person from South Shields.
“Officers have informed the next of kin and are providing support to them at this time.
“There is not believed to be any third party involvement.
“A report is being prepared for the coroner.”
