A SOUTH Tyneside dance school is raising funds to take its members to a famous London theatre.
Poppleton School of Dance and Performing Arts is heading to Her Majesty’s Theatre in London, at which the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical The Phantom of the Opera has been staged for the past 25 years.
Pupils are set to take part in a showcase, alongside dance schools from around the country, at the venue on Sunday, November 3.
Members of the group, based at Primrose Community Association in Lambton Terrace, Jarrow, secured their slot in the show after sending an audition tape to event organisers.
Lindsey Poppleton, who runs the school with her sister Tracey, said: “The closer it gets, the more the excitement is building. I think the kids are starting to get a little bit nervous as well.
“There are 34 kids going, aged between five and 20, and we all feel really privileged to be able to dance at such a prestigious and famous theatre.
“We’re very proud that we’re going to be able to take part in this show.
“The parents have paid for their children’s travel and accommodation, but we’re raising funds for costumes and for a coach to take the kids from the hotel to the theatre.
“The charity gala that Jason Cook and others did was a huge funding boost for us, and there’s loads of little fundraisers going on.
“The girls will be doing three routines of their own at the theatre and then a big group finale with the other schools.”
