Visitors to cemetery will receive daffodils on Mother's Day to remember those no longer here

The flowers will be handed out on Sunday at the gates of Hebburn Cemetery from 9.30am by a the newly formed Friends of Hebburn Cemetery.

The group was brought together after the site was the target of two vandal attacks last month.

Since then, they have held a number of fundraising events to raise cash to have CCTV cameras installed in the area.

Any additional funds will be used to improve and clean up the site.

The group is made up of Ian Houston, Carol Whyte, Mark Young, John Stewart and Trisha Vickers.

Mr Stewart said: “We thought as a group it would be nice to turn the cemetery yellow for Mother’s Day.

“Everyone who comes through the gates will be handed daffodils to place on their mum’s grave.

“For those already bringing flowers, we’ll also be asking if they’d consider placing them on a grave where there are none.”

Mr Stewart added: “We can’t thank people enough for their fundraising efforts.”

Fundraising events still to take place include a pie and peas supper at the Mill Tavern on March 25. The next day the venue will donate £2 for every two course Mother’s Day meal sold. A TV donated by Co-Op Funeral care will also be up for grabs in a raffle.

On April 2 a dance show will be held at St Aloysius Church Hall. On April 25 an Irish night will be held.

Raffle tickets for a draw taking place on March 31 are available from the Iona Club.
