HUNDREDS of residents in Jarrow will be feeling a warm glow after a multi-million pound project to improve their homes.
Vinci Construction UK has completed a £2.9m external refurbishment, repair and thermal update of three tower blocks – Ellen, Wilkinson and Monastery Courts.
The work was undertaken for South Tyneside Homes as part of a borough-wide regeneration programme.
The scheme saw 132 flats being transformed from traditionally-constructed apartment blocks into energy efficient housing.
Each apartment received a full external insulation render-wrap, energy efficient windows and doors, as well as an improved heating and hot water system.
All communal areas were also upgraded to complete the refurbishment.
Keith Shivers, regional director of VINCI Construction UK, Building Division – North East, said: “We are delighted that we have provided the residents of Jarrow town centre with affordable apartments, which are fully insulated to keep them warm over the cold winter months.
“In the long run, the work will also reduce their energy bills.
“It was a pleasure working for South Tyneside Housing, and we look forward to working with them in the future.”
Mark Whittle, director of investment for South Tyneside Homes, said: “The refurbishment of the three high-rise blocks in Jarrow town centre represents a major milestone in our Decent Homes programme.
“It is one which has led to significant improvements in the lives of the tenants who live there.
“The residents are telling us how much warmer their homes are and how the external appearance of the blocks has been aesthetically improved as a result of this work.”
