The increase in hate crimes, racism and xenophobia in Britain in recent weeks following the Brexit vote has left a stain on our country.
Members of the Wearside Amnesty International Group stand against such hateful and disgusting acts.
Sunderland has always been a welcoming place.
Only days after the referendum we watched a short video in which people who have sought sanctuary in Sunderland bore witness to the warm welcome they have received here.
We want to ensure it continues to be so. Community leaders all over the country must publicly condemn these acts of hate and we are calling on all local councillors in Sunderland to do just this, to send a strong message to perpetrators that there is no place for hatred here.
