Letter of the week: South Shields cyclists ‘race recklessly’ around the town

Once again I feel I should comment on the ever growing nuisance of badly behaved cyclists in our town and the problem is worsening by the day.

They race recklessly round the town, on pavements and pedestrian areas with scant regard for anyone in their path. Yet, if you challenge them you are met with a torrent of abuse.

The trouble is that this nuisance has been ignored by the council and the authorities for so long that they, the badly behaved cyclists, feel they are immune from any punishment.

I actually witnessed a young man cycling up Westoe Road on the wrong side of the road, riding toward oncoming traffic and he wasn’t holding the handlebars to steer the cycle. This act

alone must break so many laws, but it just continues until one day someone will be badly injured or even killed, then officialdom will then ask: “How did this happen?”

Our laws such as this and littering, fly-tipping and vandalism are constantly being dismissed by authorities without reaction.

Wake up before it’s too late.

Jack Wiffin.
