Port takes care of piers

In response to a letter in The Shields Gazette on Friday, September 16, we would like to point out that the Port of Tyne is responsible for the maintenance of the piers and lighthouses at South Shields and Tynemouth.

The piers are open during the hours of daylight under normal circumstances.

However, they have to be closed for public safety during periods of bad weather and occasionally for maintenance and essential repairs.

Each year the Port of Tyne spends around £300k maintaining both piers so that they can continue to protect the harbour entrance and also be enjoyed by the public.
