JARROW boss Dave Bell knows his side face a tough ask if they are to repeat last season's phenomenal performance.

Jarrow came from nowhere to end the Wearside League campaign as runners-up, putting together a superb run that saw them lose just once after Christmas.

It resulted in the club's highest-ever final placing, and inevitably raised expectations for the new season.

But Bell is wise enough to know that football doesn't work like that, and that Jarrow have to start all over again.

Their opening day defeat – 3-1 at Annfield Plain – showed how tricky the league will be again, and Bell's aspirations reflect this.

"Our aim is to try and win something this year, but our best hope for that is a cup," he said.

"Being realistic, I do not think we will win the league, or even finish as high as we did last year. A good season for us would see us finish in the top six."

Bell has recruited Paul Archer, Stephen Cockburn and Chris Lunn to his squad, while Daniel Purvis also returns to the club after a spell away.
