JARROW Roofing and Hebburn Town went into today's derby clash on the back of completely contrasting results.
Whereas Roofing's confidence was up for the visit of their neighbours after a comfortable 4-1 win over Thornaby, Hebburn were left shattered by a 7-1 hammering by Stokesley.
Roofing are looking to bounce back to Division One of the Northern Leag
ue at the first attempt, and these sort of performances will ensure they live up to their tag as one of the favourites for promotion.
Despite being without manager Richie McLoughlin, the Roofers – led by former Torquay United boss Wes Saunders – easily disposed of a side who went close to going up last season.
Star striker Eifion Williams grabbed his first goal for the club, but it was his strike partner Chris Archer who continued to steal the show.
Archer has been in prolific form early on this campaign, and his brace took his tally to five for the season.
Richard Paxton grabbed Roofing's other goal, with Paul Vickers netting a consolation for Thornaby.
The league table is only starting to take shape, but already there are only two sides with 100 per cent records – the highly-fancied Sunderland RCA, and Stokesley.
The later produced a great display of finishing in front of goal to stun Hebburn, though there was little between the sides at the interval, Lev Yalcin and Stuart Wise making the visitors pay for missed opportunities.
After the break, however, everything Stokesley tried turned to goals.
A 30-yard strike from Neil Radigan on 53 minutes just about put the game out of Hebburn's reach, and when two stunning attempts by Craig Johnson both found the top corner, the game was up.
Stokesley kept going, and another astonishing goal – this time a volley by Radigan – made it six, and although Michael Armstrong pulled a goal back for Tony Robinson's men, Gareth Williams found the net to complete the rout.
More bad news for Hebburn is the revelation that experienced defender Colin Nesbitt has a hernia, and could be missing for two months.
