SOUTH Shields crashed out of the Ernest Armstrong Memorial Trophy after losing their semi-final at Sunderland RCA 4-1.
Shields turned in a poor performance as the home side gained revenge for last week's league defeat.

John Newton was the RCA hero with a hat-trick to sink the off-colour Mariners.

Newton opened the scoring after 27 minutes, tapping in from a suspiciously offside position, and four minutes later, Andy Jennings doubled the lead with a far-post header.

It soon became 3-0 when Newton grabbed his second of the night with a header on 39 minutes.

Although Shields briefly rallied after the break, Newton completed his hat-trick on 62 minutes.

Shields finally grabbed a consolation goal with just seconds remaining when Johnny Wightman's cross was headed home by Dean Patton.

For more match reaction, see today's Gazette.
