A FRESH look with young, untried players may be seen by many as a gamble, but Hebburn Town boss Tony Robinson is confident it is the way to success.

And judging by their opening day victory at Marske United, he may just be right.

Hebburn appear to have benefitted from Cleadon SC's demise last season.

The Wearside League outfit folded due to many problems before the end of last season, and Robinson acted quickly over the summer to acquire the services of some of their promising youngsters.

Striker Michael Armstrong and midfielders Nicholas Pain, Paul Trosh, Finbar Lynch and Steven Graham all played for Cleadon last season, and Robinson has enough faith in their ability to step up to Northern League level.

Armstrong, Pain and Graham all started Hebburn's first game of the season, with Graham scoring – along with another new boy, Martin Urwin, who also signed from local football.

The likes of established strikers Tony Hanson and Gary McCartney have departed to fellow Division Two sides Esh Winning and Birtley Town respectively, and while Hebburn may miss their goals and experience – the pairing provided the majority of the side's goal threat over the past few seasons – their departures have allowed Robinson the chance to introduce an exciting new frontline.

And with young keeper Anthony Dixon fully established as the side's No 1, there is a fresh outlook to the side, backed up by more established players like Colin Nesbitt, Daniel Gray, Stuart Pattison, Anthony Myers and brothers Paul and Joe Donaghy.

Hebburn official Alan Armstrong said: "The team is so young that Tony is looking for the experienced players to supplement the youth.

"The first two friendlies against Durham City and Dunston Fed saw them play full sides, and they really went for us.

"But thenwe only got beat 2-1 off Newcastle Blue Star, and then beat Scottish side Huntly 2-1 ourselves.

"There has been a gradual improvement from the youngsters, which they took into the first game."

And after a difficult campaign last time around, Hebburn are hoping for more success on the field.

Thompson's Solicitors have joined Meldrum Construction, LGV, Premier Scaffolding and Stirling Scaffolding in sponsoring the club, and chairman Bill Laffey added: "We're looking to improve greatly on last season."
