JARROW Roofing moved into the quarter-finals of the Durham Challenge Cup after a 1-0 win over South Shields at Filtrona Park last night.
Neither side were able to create any clearcut chances in the early exchanges as the defences held firm.
Shields' first opportunity came in the 20th minute when Richard Paxton collected a ball from Simon Fitzpatrick and fired a shot at goal from 30
yards that was headed for the top corner, only to be denied by a superb save from Gary Frater.
Roofing responded, and within minutes fashioned their first opportunity when Kevin Davison floated a corner towards Brian Rowe, who saw his shot cleared off the line by James Oates.
With half an hour gone, Chris Feasey won the ball on the right flank, and beat his man before cutting in towards goal.
He fired a shot in from the angle of the box, but once again he was denied by Frater in the Roofing goal.
A minute later, Shields pressed forward again winning a free kick 25 yards from goal. Ben Riding stepped forward to take the kick, but fired his shot straight at the goalkeeper.
In the closing minutes of the half, Roofing attacked on the right flank as Nathan Bonar and Tony Thirkell combined to release Michael Chapman, but his shot was comfortably saved by Chris Anderson.
At the start of the second half, Shields won a corner on the right, and Craig Ellison played the ball to Richie Paxton who fired the ball towards goal, but Brian Rowe was on hand to head the ball clear.
Shields were enjoying a rare spell of possession and Tony Stephenson collected a ball from Chris Feasey on the edge of the box. He turned and fired a shot at goal, but it cleared the bar.
From the goal kick the ball fell to Chapman, he ran down the left flank before crossing to Robbie Houghton, who fired a shot at goal, but with Anderson beaten, he was denied by a goal-line clearance from Ben Riding.
In the 55th minute, Feasey attacked down the left flank. He beat three men in the corner before crossing to Jonny Wightman. Got two attempts on goal, and his second flew over the bar.
With the hour-mark approaching, Roofing scored what proved to be the vital goal. Kevin Davison crossed the ball from the right flank, and it fell to Chapman – unmarked at the back post – and he had the simplest of tasks to tap home.
From the restart, Shields pressed forward, and as Simon Fitzpatrick and Ben Riding combined to release Ellison, but his shot flew over the bar.
On 65 minutes, Martin Thompson collected the ball on the right flank and crossed to Michael Hepplewhite, but he was unable to get his shot on target.
With 10 minutes left on the clock, Shields pressed forward. Feasey ran at the defence on the left, and he beat his marker before firing shot towards goal that was blocked by Rowe for a corner.
The resulting corner was sent into the box by Ellison, but Rowe was again on hand to head clear.
And Roofing held on to progress into the competition's last eight.
