SOUTH Shields crashed out of the FA Cup on Saturday after a hugely-disappointing 4-0 home defeat by Selby Town.
Shields struggled from the off, and the visitors went a goal up on seven minutes when Leigh Wood rose above the Mariners's defence to head home following a free-kick.
The visitors doubled their advantage on 14 minutes following a corner, when Dean Welburn outjumped the home defence to head home from close range.
Shields should have pulled a goal back following a superb run down the left flank by debutant Ash Davis. His cross found Mark Johnson in space, but he fired wide of the post.
On the half hour the visitors went further ahead from the penalty spot, as Brenton Liester fired the ball into the corner of the net, just out of the reach of Andy Clark in the Shields goal.
Lee Paul Scroggins fired a free-kick wide of the post, but within five minutes of the restart Selby went further ahead as Sean Gorman capitalised on a defensive error to give the visitors a four-goal advantage.
Shields did not give up, and on 53 minutes Davis produced a super cross from the left, but Willie Crew headed over, before Lee O'Donovan brought a superb diving save out of Mitchell in the Selby goal.
Crew had a header cleared off the line by a defender as Shields continued to press for a consolation goal, but were unable to work their way through a well-drilled Selby defence.
