SOUTH Shields crashed out of the Northern League Cup last night after a 1-0 defeat at West Allotment Celtic.
It was the same old story for the Mariners, who missed a host of chances, before getting punished at the other end.
Glenn Reay almost opened the scoring for Shields in the first minute, and Willie Crew twice went close in the opening period.
Crew was denied by the home keeper just after the interval, before Celtic broke the deadlock in the 68th minute through Daniel Patterson.
Crew had a header saved, and Jonny Wightman grazed the post as Shields pushed for an equaliser, but when Michael Rodenby's 85th-minute free-kick was saved, the Mariners' hopes fizzled out.
