SOUTH Shields entertained local rivals Hebburn Town in front of a large vociferous crowd in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup.
The home side started much the quicker, and almost took the lead within the first minute, David Graham outjumping the Hebburn Town defence only to see his header was cleared off the line.

With 10 minutes on the clock, Shields went close again. Mark Johnson latched onto a through ball from Lee Paul Scroggins, but his shot was comfortably saved by Anthony Dixon in the Hebburn goal.

Shields were dominating the game, and it was no surprise when they opened the scoring on 12 minutes.

Craig Russell sent a superb ball into the Hebburn box, and Johnson fired past the keeper from close range to open the scoring.

The home side doubled their advantage three minutes later, Lee O'Donovan chipped a pass over the Hebburn defence for Marc Brocklehurst, and he controlled the ball before rounding the keeper to slot the ball into an empty net.

Shields were continuing to dominate the youthful Hebburn side, but were unable to extend their advantage as they were thwarted by a defence which was well marshalled by former Mariner Colin Nesbitt.

Brocklehurst was proving to be a thorn in the Hebburn defence as he attacked down both flanks, and with 30 minutes on the clock he split the defence with a superb ball to David Graham, but with only the keeper to beet he shot just wide of the upright.

Brocklehurst himself went close minutes later, but with the keeper well beaten his shot grazed the outside of the post.

As half time approached only a reaction save from Dixon in the Hebburn goal prevented Johnson from increasing the Shields advantage.

But within five minutes of the restart, Shields were three goals to the good as Johnson claimed his second of the game, volleying past Dixon from a Brocklehurst corner.

Hebburn fought back back and reduced the arrears as Paul Donaghy outjumped the Shields defence to head past Andy Clark.

From the restart Shields attacked down the right flank through Tony Coe, and he crossed the ball to Lee O'Donovan at the back post, but his shot was well saved by Dixon.

With 10 minutes left, rShields restored their three-goal advantage as Johnson fired past the keeper to complete his hat-trick and give Shields a 4-1 lead.

Substitutes Craig Hackworth and Coe combined to complete the scoring with only a couple of minutes left on the clock.

Hackworth rounded his marker on the left flank befoe sending a cross to Coe, who turned to beat his man before crashing the ball into the Hebburn net to give Shields a 5-1 victory.

Shields now face Selby Town of the Northern Counties East Premier Division in the next round at home on August 30. They beat Northern League side Seaham Red Star 3-1.
