SIMONSIDE saw their quadruple bid crumble at the weekend, but they still have hopes of a treble.

Sima were thumped 6-1 by Whitehill in the final of the Durham Alliance League Cup on Friday night, but bounced back less than 24 hours later to book their place in the Washington Aged People's Trophy final.

And with three wins needed to land the league title, and the Clem Smith Bowl already in the bag, it still promises to be a fantstic season for the club.

Chairman Bob Gray said: "Whitehill just wanted it more than us on Friday, and they gave us a bit of a lesson.

"But we bounced back well to beat Cornforth 5-3 in the semi-final on Saturday, and are in another final, although the games are still coming thick and fast."

Lee O'Donovan and Mark Drysdale scored within three minutes of each other to give Sima the advantage at the interval against Cornforth, and when Sean Flood added a third, it looked like Sima were cruising.

Dean Smith pulled a goal back for Cornforth, but Shaun Edwards immediately responded to restore the three-goal lead, only for John Cook and then Bradley Kane to score on 81 and 84 minutes respectively to make it 4-3.

But as Cornforth pressed for an equaliser, Edwards wrapped up the win in the last minute.

It was a good weekend for Northern Alliance Division Two promotion-chasers SHIELDS UNITED too, as they beat rivals Stobswood 2-1 with arguably their best performance of the season.

United went ahead inside five minutes thanks to an own goal, while Mark Davies scored a 20-yard right-foot curler on the 60th minute to put Shields in the driving seat.

Shaun Newbrook made two top-class saves to deny the impressive Martin Hogg, but Hogg did manage to score with five minutes to go to set up a nervy ending.

Shields manager Gareth Allen said: "We bossed the game and all 14 lads were outstanding. The team morale was as high as I've ever seen it, and the lads never gave up.

"Promotion is in our own hands now, exactly where we'd have liked it from day one of the season."

In the Wearside League, JARROW went down 1-0 to Kirbymoorside after a 14th-minute wonder strike from the visitors.

Jarrow huffed and puffed but couldn't find an equaliser, and boss Dave Bell thought his side were unlucky.

He said: "We enjoyed virtually all the possession, but created only a few opportunities.

"Although we did not play well we didn't deserve to get beat."
