SEBASTIEN Bassong is quickly learning in the Premier League's school of hard knocks.
The French defender is set for another start in the centre of Newcastle United's defence against Chelsea on Saturday, when he could come up against fellow Clairefontaine graduate Nicolas Anelka.

Bassong arrived from Metz in the summer in a low-key deal, but the 22-year-old has already made a big impression.

And team-mate Charles N'Zogbia – who himself made the difficult transition from French to English football – believes Bassong has all the attributes to prosper.

He said: "He's settling in well. He's learning English quickly, and we know what he can do.

"The Premier League's hard, physical and also quick, and so far, he's learned quickly.

"This is a big stage. It's a big step to leave France for England. Now he has to do the best to stay in the team.

"This is the Premier League where everybody wants to play."
